How Cable Internet Works
Cable Internet service is a type of broadband connection that transmits data over a cable television network.
Unlike dial-up and DSL, which transmit data over a phone line, cable Internet service uses the cable TV infrastructure to transmit data. Cable Internet users have a special cable modem, provided by the cable Internet companies themselves, that use a slice of the available bandwidth of the connection to download and upload information. Just like how a DSL connection does not tie up its phone line, a cable Internet connection does not affect the ability to watch TV throughout throughout the house.

What is DOCSIS™?
DOCSIS stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications, and is the technology standard that cable modems use to provide internet access over a cable television system. A DOCSIS certified modem is will work with any DOCSIS compliant cable system. DOCSIS modems are generally easier to support because a lot of documentation is available.
Some advantages to consider:
- It is "always-on" and you can still watch your TV channels while surfing the world wide web.
- You can use the cable outlet you already have at your home or business, if available.
- The modem is typically supplied to you by your service provider.
- The distance between you and your provider does not affect your speed adversely.
